Introduction

Dubai is one of those cities that always seems to surprise you. People come from all over the world to see what makes it so unique. It’s not just a top global destination but it’s probably one of the most exciting places you could visit. And when you think of Dubai, the Burj Khalifa immediately comes to mind. Standing at a jaw-dropping 829 meters, it’s the tallest building on the planet which towering over everything else not just in Dubai but anywhere in the world.

Concept

The Burj Khalifa was designed to be the main feature of a large development that includes 30,000 homes, nine hotels, a 3-hectare park, at least 19 residential skyscrapers, the Dubai Mall, and a 12-hectare artificial lake called Burj Khalifa Lake. The decision to build the Burj Khalifa was part of the government’s plan to move away from an oil-based economy and focus more on services and tourism. Officials claim that this spending is necessary to create projects like the Burj Khalifa in order to increase their international recognition.  Before its official opening in January 2010, the tower was called Burj Dubai.

The building was named after Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the ruler of Abu Dhabi to honor him. Abu Dhabi and the UAE government helped Dubai by giving billions of dollars in loans to pay off its debts as Dubai had borrowed at least $80 billion for various construction projects. In the 2000s, Dubai began changing its economy but between 2007 and 2010, the city went through an economic crisis which caused many large projects to be abandoned.

Design and Architecture

The Burj Khalifa’s architectural design is nothing short of revolutionary. Overall the tower consists of 163 floors above ground and 2 levels below. It features a triangular footprint with the building’s wings stretching outward from the central core which creates a sleek, aerodynamic shape that minimizes wind resistance which was a critical consideration given the building’s incredible height.

The structure itself is made from a combination of steel, glass, and high-strength reinforced concrete. The exterior is clad in over 4,000 tons of glass, 103,000 square meters of glass, 15,500 square meters of embossed stainless steel, and 103,000 square meters of reflective glass.

One of the most remarkable features of the Burj Khalifa is its buttressed core design. This feature which is characteristic of super tall skyscrapers helps distribute the massive loads generated by the building’s height. The core is reinforced with concrete and steel which making it incredibly sturdy while minimizing the building’s overall weight.

The interior of the Burj Khalifa is just as impressive as its exterior. The luxurious Armani Hotel Dubai is located on the lower floors. The hotel’s interiors were designed by the fashion icon Giorgio Armani with a focus on understated elegance and opulence.

The tower also houses over 900 private residences. In addition to the residential spaces, the building features commercial offices, health clubs, spas, and even a sky lounge on the 148th floor.

Development

On 12 January 2004, The construction of the Burj Khalifa started and on 1 October 2009, the outside of the building was finished. The building officially opened on January 4, 2010. It is located in Downtown Dubai a 2 square kilometer (490 acre) area near the ‘First Interchange’ along Sheikh Zayed Road, close to Dubai’s main business area. The design and engineering of the tower were done by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill from Chicago with Adrian Smith as the main architect and Bill Baker as the main structural engineer. The main contractor was Samsung C&T from South Korea, along with the local company Arabtec and the Belgian group BESIX.

The building’s completion in 2010 marked the end of an intense six-year process that involved over 12,000 workers, engineers, and specialists from around the globe. Each phase of construction came with unique challenges from the creation of the tower’s massive concrete foundation to the installation of the glass panels that form its exterior. One of the key challenges was dealing with Dubai’s extreme temperatures and high winds.

Cost and Budget

The total cost of constructing the Burj Khalifa was estimated at $1.5 billion which is a substantial investment for a project of this scale. This was part of Dubai’s broader economic strategy to diversify its economy and develop a global tourism and real estate industry.

History behind the height

From the beginning, there were several unconfirmed reports about planned height increases. Initially, it was proposed as a virtual clone of the 560-meter (1,837-foot) Melbourne Grolo Tower in the Docklands Waterfront Development in Australia and the tower was redesigned by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. Marshall Strabala, an architect from Skidmore, Owings & Merrill who worked on the project until 2006 which mentioned at the end of 2008 that Burj Khalifa was originally designed to be 808 meters tall.

The building’s architect Adrian Smith realized that the upper part of the building did not seamlessly integrate with the rest of the structure. Therefore, he sought and received approval to increase its height. It was said that no additional floors were added, which aligned with Smith’s effort to make the tower’s upper portion more slender. The building officially opened on January 4, 2010.
